more domains aka "kärt barn har många namn"

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 20. March 2004 - 18:40

An old Swedish expression says: "Kärt barn har många namn" (Loved child has many names) - fitting here to announce yet-another-domain pointing to adland.

adrag.com now points to ad-rag.com, for all those people who can't be bothered with the dash. So now you can say "it's at adrag dot com":P Wee!

Also, you can have far more characters in your "info" box, and HTML, so if you want to get fancy like junyr did, or link like nuts like I did you now have 500 chars to do it on. Go nuts. Personalize!

the trackback failure.

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 7. February 2004 - 22:12

Yeah, we liked the idea of trackback and wanted to use it, even though we've never used MovableType stuff. So we went and read up on how it worked, paying extra attention to this part:

Changes

1.1 (October 10, 2002)

* TrackBack pings should now be sent using HTTP POST instead of GET. The old behavior is deprecated, and support for GET will be removed in January 2003.

cip, who's so clever, started hammering on the code and by January 20, 2003, we had trackback weee!

New skins, and no theme override.

In preparation for the onslaught of traffic coming for the super bowl ads here on Sunday, I decided to give the theme override a break. Now that you check out the previously always blue Commercials section, and the previously bright orange Badland section you'll see that they are the same color as everywhere else.

Opium ad removed.

Just a little note to let everyone know what is going on with the whole p*ypal frozen account deal. We have finally received a reply as to why our account was frozen. yeay!

'Your website contains material that violates P*yPal's Acceptable Use Policy. For example: http://adland.tv/179.php. You will either need to
remove the material that violates our policy or remove P*yPal from your website.

The image of Sophie Dahl in the nude, posing for Tom Fords Opium advert in the year 2000 - has been removed. The article was posted April 24, 2001. We've been using that internet pay service since Oct. 17, 2001 and have been a Verified member since somewhere around November of that year. We've also removed all references to that internet-money-company "bestow-bro" as being our payment place.

The 'for example' worries me. Are there others? We've asked. Time will tell.

Tom Ford would be proud. ;)

Paypal froze our assets - newbie super access closed.

Posted by dabitch on 15. January 2004 - 16:42

Our paypal account as been frozen - right now we can not receive any donations for a super adgruntship that allows access to the commercial archives. :(

We've emailed and asked paypal - who as you probably know just got bought by Ebay - what exactly we've done to deserve this. Apparantly it is "adult content". They have yet to point out where exactly this site carries such content.

In regular ads? Well who would have thunk it. As this story progresses we'll let you know whats going on.

I'm really sorry about it - apologies to all adgrunts who wanted an upgrade and can't get one via paypal now.

heads up!

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 12. January 2004 - 21:08

Heads up to all the regular Super adgrunt crowd - while the dollar is dropping, the costs of running this place are doing the exact opposite.

We'll have to raise the donation price - and possibly switch to currency we pay our bills in. This heads up is so that you regulars can take advantage of the current setup, before the change.

Unscientific poll - How do you feel about euros?

Happy New Year!

Adlands adgrunt admins and serious ad collectors who make this place what it is: Claymore, Caffeinegoddess, Robblink and myself wishes all other adgrunts a happy new year. Eight years ranting about ads on the web and counting!

Here's to a great 2004! *toasting all of you with some bubbly*

Thank you for stopping by, for joining the community, and kudos to all who stood on the soapbox and posted some ad news.

May we all have fun and great luck in 2004.

ratings sorted by date

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 4. November 2003 - 14:55

Hey all. Just a quick note to let everyone know that the ratings now sort by date so the latest rated is on top. Adgrunts who do rate stuff, like myself, cip, mikker, Reznut, adlib, claymore, caffeinegoddess, marcomp and happ61 now have their freshest ratings stored on top. Makes for a fun surf to see what others love and hate enough to rate. ;) Thanks to all who rate stuff and to cip for tweaking the system.

adgrunts online now - sorted

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 14. October 2003 - 15:39

The adgrunts online now page now loads up ordered by which adgrunt was last seen around here - rather than the oldfashioned and quite useless alphabetical order. Thanks to cip for the help.

I'm considering deleting accounts that aren't used (never logged into) in the next six months, as to me it's pretty obvious that not every account out of the 19939 accounts created has been used. I'll be waiting six months (from today) so that y'all have a chance to log in and prove your account is active, of course.

No more autoplay on commercials

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 27. September 2003 - 22:40

Autoplay you say?
Why yes, all commercials in the database had the habit of auto-starting as soon as they loaded - adgrunt pufu pointed out on the McDonalds I'm luvin' it thread, that pufu wasn't lovin' it.
In fact it is rather annoying when one wants to comment or rate a commercial, as the reload causes the commercial to start over.
100% of the other adgrunts we surveyed agreed. ;) Remember, the data will admit to anything when tortured long enough.

So, we waved our magick wand over the database and changed 11434 commercials (My god how did we get so many?) to not automatically play when loaded, instead you press the play button when you want to watch it. Hope y'all like it!

The Void Moves On

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 24. September 2003 - 14:42

Since November of last year, AdLand had been home to a growing number of Hugh McCloud’s oft groovy business card cartoonities known as Gaping Void. We dug 'em.

But now, Hugh and his creations have cloned out into other websites besides AdLand. Because of this duplicity, we sadly say goodbye to the Void with the heavy hearts of parents seeing their children grow up much, much too soon. In its volatile place, we will continue to do what we were born to do - bring you the best, and the best of the worst, from the land of the AdGrunt - advertising culture, gossip, buzz, breaking news, reviews, links, exclusives, info, commercials, trends, surprises and more. Always interesting. Always advertising. Always AdLand.

Power outage blacks out Denmark

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 23. September 2003 - 16:11

A massive power outage closed down shops, stopped trains and elevators, traffic lights, and naturally servers in Denmark, Bornholm, South of Sweden and parts of Northern Germany today.

The outage started in Swedens Ringhals which exports power to the above named countries. Nameservers and other internet traffic may have glitches for a few more hours as the power is now slowly returning, street by street. There is no need to email the hostmaster about failing to reach the site, as I knew it before you guys.. ;)

On the upside, our office freezer has finally been through a much needed defrosting. ChinChin!

No more anonymous comments.

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 22. September 2003 - 14:48

Quite a few adgrunt members have asked so nicely that I turn the anonymous (non-members) comments off.

Anonymous commenters tend to be truly off topic and/or 'radical' or perhaps inflammatory. I don't see why one can't be brave enough to post such things under ones established username, an identity here that may or may not be revealing who you are in Real Life™.

I agree with them, if you want to say something, it only takes a second to log in, and with over 18000 members already signed up, we shouldn't have this many anonymous posts.

Rate your favorite best and absolute worst films!

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 19. August 2003 - 16:08

Hello all happy adgrunts, we have a new toy courtesy cip - a rating system!

I thought this might be a fun way to rate your favorite films, vs the ones you really can't stand - super adgrunts don't miss out on giving a thumbs up or down on commercials as you watch them.

Your ten best and ten worst choices will be displayed on your user pages, see my page for an example in action. Other users may see your scores and thus find some great commercials they might have missed otherwise.

summer site service

Cleaning time!

Okay y'all, apart from the ad links out - which I told you about earlier [subliminal: go vote go vote go vote on your favorites] we've also sorted a better search!

Search on something, say 'snapple' - and you'll notice that you now can see "the next ten results".

If you search for something that has even more results, say something like "bud" or "MGD" - you can browse through the results by the "next ten results" at the bottom of the page. Aint that googlelichious!

another new thing, the category name is no longer a link, people seemed to click on that too often not realising they'd only get the category page (they thought it was a link to the article!). You can use the menubar on top instead when you want to enter a specific category, like cartoons, badland or commercials.

The topic symbols will still bring up a search of the latest within that topic - click that crayon box to see what I mean.

We'll be right back after these 10,000 commercial messages.

adland reached a new plateau today when we posted our ten thousandth Quicktime commercial on the site.

Bleat! Honk! Br-r-r-r-rappp! Pftbbbble! (That's us tooting our own horn.)

Along with the 10,000+ ads in our commercial archive, here's some other stats we thought we'd share:

Around 900 of those spots come from Shannon Coffey's original Commercial Archive, the first great American advertising collection on the Web (yes, pre-adcritic), and the one that began it all.

Over 2,000 of those commercials come from the Claymore Project, a collection of pert'near all the Super Bowl commercials from the last 25 years - the largest collection of its kind on the Internet, if not the world.

Almost three and a half million different visitors have checked out adland since April 2000 when it became the slashalike communal structure.

Our registered adgrunt (users) count has passed the 12,000 mark.

It's adland, and we're just getting started.

our reply to the PUMA c&d

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 16. March 2003 - 15:54

Like any other site who posted the false adverts for sneaker company we'd rather not name again - we received a c&d order too. Unlike some of the other sites, we're not taking the images down.

click continue to see the reply we sent. it's not very exiting.

domain commercial-archive.com hijacked

dabitch's picture

The domain name http://commercial-archive.com that normally leads here has been hijacked.

It can take 24-48hrs before the domain resolves correctly.

who linked here?

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 3. March 2003 - 21:36

The "who linked here" box now appearing at the bottom left [above that cute weather pixie] is pretty much your typical latest referers box.

Except - it counts the referers on each page - which is why that box reads different when you're reading an article - and mainly show searchengines like "google" on the first page.

In other words, if you link to a specific article here - say this
Badlander about cars, or this Nazi meat - your page will be the refering link in the box of that page you just linked to.

Non logged in strangers - commenting is now on for you too - hopefully, you'll like it and not abuse it. ;)

also testing how this place works without double links. Now only things not linked in the top navigational button bar [now with orange] get a link in the left block. this frees up a lot of space so i hope it will work.
