Wait... the Goodby rip-off made it into CA?? What the hell is wrong with those judges. Have none of them actually seen a CA Annual before?

>>Great catch! I*ve seen those A*s ads in the CA annual, I think or somewhere else. I hadn*t seen the Mad Dog*s stuff before though. Do you know if the Mad Dog stuff came first?

Mad Dogs was definitely first. And I remember seeing the stuff when I lived in NYC. That*s bad. I don*t know what*s worse, some junior team at Goodby pulling this rip-off or Jeff and Rich being so obtuse to the assignment/process that they let it slide. A legendary agency built on some of the best creative in the US, should never, ever let this happen.
Drats... wneks image is gone - anyone else have a CA annual where one can find the Goodby ads?
And how I would love to have my ego stroked there... If even just for a while. grin
As if maddogs ever did any good advertising. They are nothing more than a ego stroking portfolio center.
>>But we all have seen something that we were "inspired by", "use as reference" or "payed homage to." Even the big guns. ... But the trick is not to immulate the reference exactly, but to add your own twist so as to make it your own. Especially when we all read the same trades.

I think it*s ok to be inspired by or borrow a style, type treatment or graphic element but not a whole concept.
I finally got my ad annual so I*m posting a comparison. They didn*t have the exact one I was thinking of in CA, but it*s basically the same.
Nothing against Goodby, I love their work and hope advertising starts picking up back in San Francisco
Last summer, a self-promotional with the tagline "The Strength of Ink."was sent to an Art Center colleague who is now a C.D. at Goodby. Not long after that, a Got Milk spot was aired with the tag "The Strength Within" in the same font and layed out exactly the same. Coincidence? Probably. But we all have seen something that we were "inspired by", "use as reference" or "payed homage to." Even the big guns. I*ve even seen books that show nationally known designer*s work and the reference they were busted with. I admit whenever I see anything related to this biz* (cool type, fresh illustration and photo styles, clever ads, trick brochures, interesting print techniques, etc.) I snatch and file *em in "Sparky" - my idea file. But the trick is not to immulate the reference exactly, but to add your own twist so as to make it your own. Especially when we all read the same trades.
*03 CA annual I believe. I*d check but I don*t have it with me at the moment.
wreks shoots... and he scores!
that is a good Badlander - so which annual is the Goodby ones in.. Or are they current as in running now? Anyone got a digicam in san fran? smile
ohh... that is blatant. I do remember Mad Dog*s "that*s when the big hand is on the..." one in the (checking)... *98 CA annual.
Great catch! I*ve seen those A*s ads in the CA annual, I think or somewhere else. I hadn*t seen the Mad Dog*s stuff before though. Do you know if the Mad Dog stuff came first?
Stumbled across badland today and coincidentally found something that may fit in there as well.
I don't know if any of you are from around here, the sf bay area. But goodby got the A's account again and launched a campaign last year "you're in baseball country now." If you took BART anywhere you would have seen some of their headline driven pieces. They talked to A's Fans (something like) "Have a great time at the game" and Non-A's fans "Like you can even read this" and then it had the tag. They were art directed somewhat distressed in a poster style using the green and yellow colors of the A's. I thought they were pretty cool, I believe they made it into the recent CA advertising annual (if I had my copy here I'd scan them).
Anyway I was browsing mad dog's website this morning and I came across this

The art direction is practically the same, the concept is the same, even the tag is quite similar. I'll try and scan goodby's A's version but the ads are the same. Anyone else notice this? Going to school in sf, goodby is looked upon very highly, I'm somewhat disappointed to see them being unoriginal.
