Badland hypothesis 1: It's bad enough when you're forced to use stock footage. It's worse when the money guys are too cheap to buy exclusive rights to the scenes.

Badland hypothesis 2: An agency with two clients. Brainstorm! We'll use the same location and crew for two different clients, air both at the same time and bill each one the full charges. Ka-ching! No one will ever find out!

Badland hypothesis 3: A 1-in-a-bajillion freaky fluke. At least one agency had the aesthetic good taste to get rid of that annoying power line.

The five steps to badland infamy*
1. You can't come up with a concept to sell State Fair Corn Dogs.
2. You see an Extra Gum commercial and dig the idea.
3. You rip the idea.
4. Extra's agency renews gum ad for another 13 weeks.
5. Your corn dog spot runs immediately after gum spot during commercial break.

"Read more" to view the ensuing 45 seconds of mirth and doppelgänger mayhem (if you're a super adgunt, that is).

Mitsubishi vs. Volkswagen

Post date: Apr 19 2002 - 18:37

I scream, you scream, we all scream for originality! But, sometimes the creatives just can't help but have similar ideas.

These two car commercials have two things in common: 1) the airport and 2) kids eating ice cream.

The Volkswagen spot was created by BMP DDB UK and the Mitsubishi spot was created by Deutsch LA.

The Snuggle Struggle - a badland counterstrike

Post date: Apr 8 2002 - 01:18

What do eggs, tanks, dryer sheets, bunnies, lions, lobsters and bears have in common? No, it's not The Wizard of Oz II -- They're all part of the latest Badland entry, with one helluva twist. (Read more for more and two - count 'em two QT's)

Adhesive Commercial Rip Off

Post date: Apr 5 2002 - 09:41

A commercial here in India has been ripped off from one of the old showbook, but for the life of me I cannot remember which showbook *exactly*.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Distracting TV!

An email dropped in saying these four films were ready for Badland, since they are all based in the distracting TV idea, with various executions. Click on and follow links to see the four films from two different campaigns.

Levis vs. Harp

Post date: Feb 23 2002 - 21:40

At first I thought it was the kid's Levis that made him walk funny... but I later found out, it wasn't what he was wearing, but what he was drinking!

Doodle Trouble

Doodling in class is fine. But when you cheat off your neighbor's paper, that's just bad! Ad-rag takes you back to school with these two nearly identical ads.

Levis copies Levis uk?

Post date: Feb 11 2002 - 03:41

Two films use the same post trick, to explain "twisted to fit" vs.. well.. what exactly? Flyweight? Lightweight jeans?
The alleged copy-catter is the by now infamous TBWA/Chait/day San fran who seem to be getting in the habit...

Hyundai vs. Volkswagen

Post date: Feb 1 2002 - 21:38

What do we have here? Two very different car companies with the exact same TV commercial, even down to the music!

Bates USA West is Hyundai's agency (for now!) and the Volkswagen commercial is a spec spot created by director Shawn Driscoll (now at Coppos Films).

homage to a better ad?

Post date: Feb 1 2002 - 19:57

Us adgrunts loove ads. Us adgrunts know adhistory. Us adgrunts are sometimes waaay up our own butts with self referential ads. Yes, we're wankers.

I mean really kids, look at this. A wee bit too much of an injoke you think? Maybe. Perhaps. A tad underinspired? Maybe. Perhaps. Or maybe it's just a homage to a better ad?

ART IMITATING ART

Post date: Jan 23 2002 - 17:48

Err umm there is a disturbing similarity between the D&AD award winning Britart.com campaign from Mother and the ADCNY award-winning L.A. Museum of Contemporary Art campaign from TBWA/Chiat Day. This is probably old news but it's my first post so there.

Deer friendly ad offends hunters.

Post date: Jan 18 2002 - 15:14

The jeep ad that had hunters up in arms was pulled off the air by Chrysler. This withdrawal is the second time in two months that Chrysler has changed advertising plans after some consumers complained. Previously, the company had PentaMark rework some dialogue in a commercial for the Chrysler Concorde sedan after protests that it was too "racy".
