Enamored with that Southern Comfort commercial where the man who has 'gotta be me' struts his stuff along the beach in a bathing suit and leather shoes, a a group of students from the University of Sheffield suddenly had the bright idea to do their own version when Pete sort of volunteered to recreate it, as long as some money got raised for the local children's hospital (and he got a bottle of Southern Comfort).
What happened here? Well, Hot Wheels zoomed in on cute cars in parking lots and proceeded to package them like toy cars - and rumour has it that this actually happened to people who just popped in to the mall for a quick errand.
Amnesty.nl are currently protesting the imprisonment of Nasrin Sotoudeh in Iran and Ales Bialiatski in Belarus. Their street guerilla action is to hang images of them, with hands, on all the bars they can find in Amsterdam. That is on gates around peoples houses, parks and train stations. Private property, city property, definitely not Amnesty or a media property. Yes, ad creep is a peeve of mine if it means the city has to clean it up. Inexpensive ingenuity when it comes to media is how Amnesty gets attention since their media budget isn't large.
PETA are at it again, with their usual woman-hate. No surprises there, but once again they have recycled their own idea. You know how one visual execution with three different models pains me, as that's not really a campaign. There's one thing I think is worse, and it's doing the same idea, over and over again, expecting a different result. Even Einstein knows that's insane.

The "pointing at the viewer" guilt trip of the Lord Kitchener poster can be seen echoed in many more posters that came after it. Examples; Smokey the bear, Soviet Union poster by Dmitry Moor, 1941. A United States, World War I poster in Yiddish: "Your Old New Land must have you! Join the Jewish regiment". A British World War I recruiting poster with John Bull asking "Who's Absent? Is it YOU?" in 1915. A Reichswehr recruitment poster by Julius Ussy Engelhard, 1919. "You too must join Reichswehr". And so on. You, dear punter, are wanted as canon-fodder,

The Coffee company nudged customers to try a muffin, or "buy another coffee already" with their execution (top image) in 2008, while GermanWings led people via their free wifi (named after offers) to pages with those offers (also in 2008).

There's a new ad out, where the Delite-o-magic vending machine challenges people to press the button 100 times, bow down and kneel before it, jump on one leg and dance like a maniac, just to get a free pack of Delites. Forget that "How far will people go for the taste of Fantastic Delites?" sounds a lot like "What would you do for a Klondyke bar" for a second, and forget that it would take five hours to push the button five-thousand times, lets look at the vending machine part of this idea shall we?
Back in 1999, there was - according to all rumors - quite the dramatic pitch for the überhot account of Adidas. W+K Amsterdam was involved, and from the ashes of that pitch was born a brand new agency: 180. Would they show off good once they showed some work? Yes, they would. This Adidas ad blew most people away back then, and was ripped off a few times (some Dutch bank copy was in an early Badlander here). I personally applauded it for being my go-to whenever I needed to show a client that YES you do not to speak the VO when it's written on the screen already, gosh darnit.

I feel for my old co-workers at Oriflame for being slapped with this ad-bannage. First off, Oriflame is a bit like Avon in that there are troops of independent salespeople, and they are all armed with the all powerful catalogue. This catalogue is distributed to 38 different countries and 3.5 million consultants.
There's a silly amount of meetings discussing every detail of a layout where top execs from several different countries will offer their invaluable input such as "we need more glamour, can you print glitter?" and "She needs to smile more" followed by "No, smiles don't sell in my country" followed by "In my country she needs to smile like Mona Lisa" and so on.
Provided you haven't turned skitzo during one of these many meetings you will soon enough (read: six months) have a layout that has turned into a mishmash of details and additions much like that "if microsoft designed Apple packaging" video. Despite all that, you manage to produce something... And then the Swedish Reklamombudsman bans it because the girls looks like a ballerina-girl and the boy looks like a tool-loving boy.. It's enough to drive an art director to drinking the kid-bodywash advertised.
Newsweek is getting a lot of press for the cover "The first gay president", illustrated by Obama wearing a rainbow (neon?) halo above his head. He is getting this title for his "bullshit gay marriage announcement" as Gawker put it. As I recall in September last year Barack Obama was the first Jewish president, as depicted on the cover on New York Magazine, so I'm only here to point out the Badlander-like issue. If I see Barack Obama as the first woman president on a magazine cover near you soon, I'll personally slap the creative who designed that cover with a wet trout. I bet Obama will be wearing lipstick too.
The Seventh International Conference on Climate Change have already pulled their billboards in Chicago, less than 24 hours after they went up. The billboards showed Ted Kaczynski, the infamous Unabomber, Charles Manson, a mass murderer, Fidel Castro and other global warming alarmists including Osama bin Laden and James J. Lee, linking belief in global warming to being a mass-murdering certified psycho-nutter. Beacuse you know, those things are totally the same.
Here's an update on those popchips ads we posted earlier this week. Gawker pondered if "racism sells?", since Asthon Kutcher put on a brownface when he played "Raj the Bollywood producer" in the popchips world wide lovers campaign. After Gawker wrote about it, so did Anil Dash and the ad has now been pulled off the intarwebs by the Popchips company. Quoting Gawker here who seem to have the same issue I have with these ads, they just plain ain't funny.
Following a thoughtful piece by Anil Dash criticizing Popchips usage of brownface in their latest ad campaign, the company's founder, Keith Belling, apologized "to anyone we offended," and promptly pulled the ad. Snippets of "Raj" still remain in this composite ad, but it too will likely be removed shortly and revised.

I don't even.... I mean, Powerthirst was a viral skit, which later became a viral ad for a film, and now has been ripped as a real ad for mineral water? Seriously? Are our collective memories so short now that we don't remember 2007? Oh. It was the drugs. Sure. Blame the drugs.
The ASA calls the above campaign amateurish and we noted that the majority of clothing items featured in the ads were outer garments, and considered that the nature of the women’s poses meant that their breasts and buttocks were the focal points of the images rather than the products. We considered that the nudity was therefore gratuitous.
I'm sure we could do an entire badlander series of ads (and Chemical brothers music videos) filmed from trains. I'm showing you these three to demonstrate how different the mood can be despite how similar filmed the motion is.
Just a note here, the Lego campaign from JvM that seems based on an internet meme/image isn't the first one from Lego to do that. It's not even the first from JvM and Lego.
Take the image above as and example. The Tank Lego ad is from "Making History" where tanks, the Brandenburg and the Ali knockout are depicted in lego. Kinda like historic moments in Lego and very much like this Tiananmen Square recreation.
Regarding the "Nike Free I would run to you" romantic saccarine overdose of an ad... Yes, It's been done before, and better too, because as I recall I didn't need an insulin shot after viewing the Japanese Cannes Gold Lion winning version of this running couple story. I did however need a bit of kleenex. Lets compare ads inside, shall we?
Via work that matters we find that WestJet flights now offer a kid-section, called Kargo Kids.

Here it seems that once again internet research has paid off for a creative team. One of the oldest badlanders we have showed that Southwest airlines campaign used viral webfilms as their funny idea back in 2000, so researching on the web is pretty old-school. We saw the Lego = Minimalist Simpsons image at the design firm Tobias & Tobias blog in a post aptly named Pattern Recognition recently, and now we see it as an ad for lego from Jung von Matt.

Soem have noted that the Invisible children's Kony 2012 posters look a lot like the Obama hope poster done by Shepard Fairey*. Yeah? Well, that's not all - their other poster with the elephant and donkey looks like they borrowed an illustration idea from the yellow D&AD pencil winning Jeep poster created by BBDO/Proximity Malaysia. Just saying.
Looks like the So Cal Clothing Store has "borrowed" the salvation army's WARdrobe Eagle design. Check Tilly's eagle tee here, looks pretty similar, doesn't it? So similar in fact, I'm putting this under dupliclaims. At least the salvation army has a reason for the war motif's in their wardrobe designs, it's all part of their global fight for social justice through art and apparel. On the Tilly's shirt I'm sure it's there just 'cuz "it looks cool".
This years ADDY's were according to the AAF "The best ever" with over 450 entries, over 400 attendees and a wonderful evening of celebrating the best work in Dallas.
Tonight during super bowl XLVI Bud Light ran and ad with a talented dog in, a dog that will fetch as son as you say "here we go". And not just anything either, noo, this dog will fetch beer. What a practical dog to have. Better than a walking fridge.
Thing is, we've seen Bud Light kinda do this one before. In a super bowl, no less.
The game hasn't even begun yet, we're all out getting snacks, chips and silly amounts of beers and other drinks in preparation for the big game. Bathroom breaks have been planned in the spots of the super bowl ads we've already showed you. Here's some more trivia that you may impress (or frighten) your friends with while the commercials are on, the first super bowl badlander. If they are adgeeks too, they'll be impressed. If they are civilians, they'll think you're a freak. Don't worry, we've all been there. God knows I have.

Welcome to cynical Advertising 101. Pander to GEN X by stoking the nostalgia flames. Too bad the car doesn't fit the demographic. How is living a little akin to driving around in a glorified minivan?
The Guardian reports that Steel Panthers posters promoting the "Balls Out" album are banned for being "overtly sexual". The ASA received four complaints about the poster which shows a barely dressed woman caressing herself while holding a pair of silver balls.
The record label Universal Island used the "we're mocking stuff from the 80s" defense and said that the ads were meant to "poke fun at the ridiculousness of the attitude to women, outfits and music in that era".
They also pointed out that the posters are meant to be "ludicrously over the top and not meant to undermine women". Cliff notes: "c'mon, we're only joking".
This ad, above, is the self-banned ad of the week from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board campaign - see the rest on facebook - that shows the dark side of what happens when you drink too much. You might end up in fights, hanging out with the "porcelain prince" all evening, have condoms break on you, cheat on your boyfriend or... get raped. From the image showing a women lying on what may be a bathroom floor the viewer will probably conclude that when you're unconscious and can't actually say no, rape is your fault. The copy on the campaign website even went so far to blame the victims friends. Now it's everyones fault. Except the rapists, of course.
Nando's are no strangers to joking with everyone and everything in their ad campaigns, but there's one thing they take seriously: threats to their own staff. A youth group loyal to Mr Mugabe has threatened Nado's staff after the Last Dictator standing aired, and Nando's has decided to pull the ad from airing reports BBC.
A statement from Nando's said: "We've noted with concern the political reaction emanating out of Zimbabwe, including perceived threats against Nando's Zimbabwe's management, staff and customers."

This looks like a case of 'demo love' that can easily turn into copyright infringement, as the example shown there with Dexim copying the work of photographer Jamie Nelson. Digital layouts have a lot to do with the uptick of this sort of thing.
