Sublymonal branding on Xanga

Some brands buy textads, others take over every Xanga member page in existence - like Sprite is currently doing with their "Sublymonal" campaign.

Not all Xanga members are happy about this, Reality_1 complains "It pisses me off just a little that they can do that without my consent." but he also recognises that if they really wanted complete control over their webpage they could have opted to not use a "free" (read advertising supported) service.

So here's what the subliminal stuff looks like in action, using Reality_1 page as an example.

Without touching the top right lemony thing, it's a grey page with a duck-logo (see image above)

But touch the lemony thing in the upper right, and presto - it is now sublymonal all over! All blinky-gif and ugly as hell. In the upper left, the Xanga.com logo has been changed to YOU LOVE LYMON. Subtle. ;)

You should check out the caffeinegoddess' post about the Uncola wars if you missed it - and here are the Sprite ads from this campaign.

never even noticed the new tab until I read this and went to check it out. I personally am so used to the google ad banner up there that I completely ignore it.

I was thinking that most people do ignore the top part, so what they are really hoping for is Xanga memberspotting it and then blogging about it. A quick search at Xang showed that very few blogged the word "Sublymonal", and of those who did two talked about this thing and neither one was very happy about it. I guess their ad plan backfired.

Hi, this is Bob Hiler from Xanga, I worked on this promotion, which I personally thought was pretty cool. You can see John Hiler, our CEO, posted about the promotion and received mostly postive feedback:

Funnily enough, "Xangans" also found a test account I created for this promotion and left comments there:

The promotion was intended to be low-key and not intrusive, like a subliminal product placement. (Get it?) :) If you want to check out other user reactions to the promotion, you can do so here:
