Wieden & Kennedy resigns Pizza Hut account

The love affair (which didn't seem very loving), between Pizza Hut and W+K London has ended today.

Wieden & Kennedy has resigned the £13 million Pizza Hut account, calling time on its three-year hold on the business. The account will now be put into review.

Some gossip that the account lost any creative allure back when Whitbread, Pizza Hut's UK franchise partner, sold its 50% stake back to its US parent Yum! Foods making it all corporately bland again. Much like their cheese actually.

Check out lots of Pizza Hut commercials here. There's one where they have footage where astronauts eat pizza in space:
Yum! Brands - Pizza Hut - 91 Countries (2006) :30 (USA)

Pizza Hut - Crunchy Cheesy crust Superbowl ad 2008

In much older news, remember when the Where's the cheese at ad was pulled one week after initial airing? Pizza Hut - Where's the Cheese at? (2002) - 0:30 (USA)

You're right, those are some pretty bland ads. LOUD, shrill, even frenetic, but bland.

I found it strange to see all the ads set in people's homes. All Pizza Hut ads here in the UK are set in the restaurants. In fact, I didn't know until I looked it up just now that Pizza Hut offers takeaway and delivery services -- I thought they were restaurant-only.

Here's a selection of UK ads for comparison. The "oh, yes!" voiceover style of the past couple of years has only recently been dropped in favour of a subtler fly-on-the-wall-style, as shown in the last one on this list.
