Bridgestone - A Dog's Life - (2002) 0:30 (Thailand)

A tale of love and betrayal. A suicidal protagonist on the loose. Its drama and suspense all rolled into one. BBDO Bangkok's "A Dog's Life" is one of my favorite ads from last year. It won Silver at the Asia-Pacific Adfest 2003.

Client: Bridgestone
Ad agency: BBDO
Country: Thailand
Year aired: 2002

This is an update by Dabitch 16 January 2020: This is the ad that Bridgestone claimed both a DMCA and Trademark violation on, which resulted in this entire website being kicked off our host and only returned on January 15 2020. The email from the lawyer representing Bridgestone reads as follows:

Hello Michael, thanks for the response and apologies for our delay.
Our client had to confer with its business in Thailand prior to responding.
The response from your online service provider client is in error for at least the following
reasons.
First, the identity of the work as a pitch video” does not entail that Bridgestone never
contracted with the vendor. Rather, Bridgestone commissioned the work through its Thai entity,
Bridgestone Sale (Thailand) Co. Ltd., to a Thai ad agency.
As a commissioned work, the work was a work for hire, meaning that copyright belongs to
Bridgestone as the commissioner, whether the ad was ever made public or not.

Second, the vendor ad agency’s location in Thailand and the DMCA’s application to the United
States are not obstacles to Bridgestone’s take-down request as international copyright law also
applies to this dispute. Thailand and Germany are signatories to the Berne convention, which
requires minimum standards for copyright law and requires parties to treat copyright of works
of foreign authors at least as well as those of its own nationals.

Third, the video and text on the Adland.tv webpage https://adland.tv/bridgestone-dogs-life-2002-030-thailand also feature
unauthorized use of Bridgestone’s trademarks, which are registered in the United States and
internationally, including in Thailand and in Germany. Such unauthorized use of Bridgestone’s
trademarks constitutes infringement and violates the Lanham Act in the United States as well as
other international trademark laws.

We renew our request to take down the video, which infringes Bridgestone’s trademarks and
copyrights, in the United States as well as internationally. Please confirm it will be taken
down.

Best Regards,
Amy
