When Merkley & Partners in New York needed a director to twirl half a dozen vehicles on a frozen lake, they enlisted Supply&Demand Director Sean Thonson. Featuring the new Mercedes C-Class in an Ice Capades-like performance, "Waltz" is pure entertainment where I kiiiiiinda wish, just a teensy bit, that someone will crash. Like bumper cars. But nope, our hero the silver Mercedes just slides right through. Looks like fun though, I bet the stunt drivers loved this job.
"Waltz" features the all new Mercedes C-Class choreographed on top of frozen Spray Lake in Alberta, Canada. Cameras froze and lenses popped as an unexpected snowstorm hit. Blustery, blizzard-like conditions weren't written in the script, however the agency and the crew decided to work with it enduring brutal sideways winds. With the exception of one composite, all shots were captured in-camera including the aerials shot via helicopter. Thonson was faced with a set of unbelievable challenges, but the results are remarkable.
The Ice Capades have nothing on the Mercedes C-Class performance.
Thonson's brilliant, visual storytelling ability was a perfect fit for this project. The director/camerman has been behind the lens for some of the industry's most successful, award-winning automotive campaigns. Thonson has established a career shooting well-known brands including Cadillac, Corona, Lexus and Dow and is currently filming a Ferrari project in the Pyrenees.
