Agreeing with everyone on The Beancast: who'da thunk it?
Last last night we recorded another episode of The Beancast, called "just one more point" which you can listen to now. Guests were Rosanna Fiske, @fiskey , CEO of PRSA. Key-note King Joseph Jaffe, @jaffejuice JaffeJuice.com and the fab Ad Contrarian, @adcontrarian a.k.a Bob Hoffman, President, Hoffman-Lewis Advertising.
Adland joins the Starbucks Digital Network
Starbucks Digital Network continues to announce new content providers, this time it's Adland.tv. The 15 year-old site is the world's best online collection of advertising from around the globe and the world's largest Super Bowl archive.
Adland.tv's founder Åsk Wappling said, "I was shocked that they approached me. But I'm really thrilled Starbucks has decided our content is on par with the likes of The Economist and ESPN. We're a site built by adgrunts, for adgrunts, and being a part of this network just goes to show how advertising is really more than just marketing, but a part of culture. Plus, most creative types I know are constantly caffeinated, so it's a perfect match."
Adland banned from google adsense, thanks to Sloggi.
You know that I've hated the Sloggi ass campaign with a passion, now it seems I have another reason to hate Sloggi. I just found this sweet message from Google adsense:
Hello,
While reviewing your account, we noticed that you are currently displaying Google ads in a manner that is not compliant with our policies. For instance, we found violations of AdSense policies on pages such as http://adland.tv/content/sloggi-another-bumfight. Please note that this URL is an example and that the same violations may exist on other pages of your website.
Prepare for the Oscar advertising by watching Oscar winning actors in ads
Adfreak are prepping for Oscar night the ad-geeky way, by collecting 50 ads starring Oscar winning actors. Watch Tommy Lee Jones look grumpy in a Suntory Boss ad, a young Cate Blanchett wish for TimTams, Richard Dreyfuss shill American Motors, and a very young Jodie Foster play "blond girl on the right" in an old McDonald's ad. They'll also be live blogging the whole Oscar night dealio here.
The Outdoor hall of fame wants your votes - which poster is your favorite?
Campaign has collected the cream of billboards & posters (and two of them are for the creme of Manchester) at the outdoor hall of fame, and wants you to help vote for the very best and your personal favorites. My tip is, start in the 60s, choose your favorites, and ignore the fact that "Reg on Smoking" shows up in the 80's category even if it was from 1992. Cast your votes, I have.
In the battle between Groupon and LivingSocial.com does the most offensive win?
Last night watching the game (well, the ads) I yelped out If you have any stock in Groupon SELL IT NOW We're watching 1999 and just for feet happen again right before our eyes., then I wondered if this was a battle between the two to see who could scare off the most customers. Like 1999, something went very wrong in the execution of the gags in these ads. In 1999, Just for feet "Kenya Mission" killed a whole company, if Groupon isn't careful, this could be them.
The Beancast 134: Flash Photo Lawsuit
I was far too buzzed on an energy drink that tastes just as bad as you'd think when The Beancast kicked off a show discussing that flash photo BMW ad, Net Neutrality, the new buzzword "Social Video" set to take over after Viral is now deemed officially dead as a word, and global car brand names. It really is a miracle I didn't cuss on the show considering what that Honda was named in Norway....
Toward the end of the show, I talk a bit about a Robyn video: the "killing me" video, in case you missed it.
Had a blast with Bill Green (@mtlb ), our favorite Make the Logo Bigger Art Director and the and Co-Host of AdVerve, got to hang with Matt Ridings, ( @techguerilla ) a Marketing Consultant who writes at The Tech Guerilla, and Peter Shankman, (petershankman ) Author/Speaker at Shankman.com. Be sure to get the show on iTunes or simply download it right now, but you'll have to wait for the outtakes to hear us cussing.
Forget the PDF, save a tree, save as WWF
WWF.de have come up with an idea to help us decide which documents don't need to waste paper, the save as WWF option. Forget tired old PDF's, most of these PDF's don't have to be printed at all, why not alert the recipient from the get-go by making your PDF impossible to print? Just download the WWF software, and you'll have the unprintable pdf option WWF available in your adobe.
Only available for Mac osX right now, but a windows version is coming soon. Brilliant! Save as WWF, save a tree! The paperless office might finally arrive.
Do we know where we're heading?
The recent years for advertising have not been bright ones. Budgets are tighter than ever and result expectations are higher than usual. Some of this can be seen in the surge of PR vs. Advertising, which was prominent with the release of Al Ries and Laura Ries book "The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR". There have been "ambient media" crazes. And yet none of it has seemed to solve the problem. PR cannot stand on it's own. Ambient media can work, but in specific situations. So then what?
