Bio

Freelance editor/proofreader with some design leanings and lots of odd tangents. Not in the advertising game, but with a lifelong interest in it, especially consumer psychology and the creative/design side.

Other interests include computer games, magic (one meaning of the word), magic (the other meaning of the word), medicine, animal behaviour, and generally being silly. And probably other things I can't think of right now.

I'm actually most impressed by the Hot Wheels car making the loop-de-loop. I could never manage that with mine. Slightly baffled trying to find a connection between the events in the ad and parking a car. Oh, these wacky ad men!

So... buy our phones and you can watch Keyboard Cat, porn, and Keyboard Cat again? Yep, that's me sold.

Tropicana's been showing "breakfast in New York" commercials for a few years now in the UK. This makes a nice change of pace (with a seasonal summery feel) while still sticking closely to the American theme.

I think the ellipsis is to imply that your "journey" never ends. Well, not until you kick the bucket, anyway, but then they won't be interested in your business any more. Every ad in this series (which has been running for years now) implies it's only a small episode out of the characters' lives, with lots of rather mysterious backstory and a clear sense of going on into the future. The very first ones were more obvious, centred around a journey on "the train of life" that's glimpsed in this one.

Snerk. I have acid reflux sometimes. It's bad enough without added ass-effects. ...And it's so much worse in an American accent!

Yeesh. It's interesting to compare this with the UK version: http://www.tellyads.com/show_movie.php?filename=TA10572 Length apart, the US version seems to be much more sexist about insisting on the qualities that make a man a "real man". The UK version traces the same archetypal journey through life, but has a much less prescriptive feel.

While reading the paper on April 1, I always make sure to keep a special lookout for BMW's annual bit of fun. This is right up there with the best.

Subtle always goes down well in the UK, but this might be a bit too subtle. I didn't get the punchline for a while.

Just to say, I've never heard of Earth Hour except right here on this page. Although the organisers say London has signed up to it, there's been nothing in the British media, either news stories or advertising. (Though I can't say anything about London local media.)

Maybe it's just me, but this ad always makes me think: "The Co-op is instrumental in spreading noxious weeds around the world." There must have been some alternative way to picture ideas "blowing in the wind".
