Late last month, the National Women's Soccer League awarded the exclusive right to found a professional women's team in Los Angeles to a consortium led by Academy Award-winning actress and activist Natalie Portman, technology venture capitalist Kara Nortman, media and gaming entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, and tech entrepreneur and venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian who led the investment through his firm Initialized Capital.
After a thorough review over the last several months, the group that at present calls itself Angel City in tribute to the city they will call home come 2022, selected three agencies to support its internal marketing team - Battery, R/GA and Plural. Each agency was hand-selected for their unique strengths in the areas Angel City felt were most important in the early stages of the club's development, including developing a strong brand foundation, building a loyal fan base, and making a positive impact on the local community.
Los Angeles-based creative ad agency Battery started working with Angel City in early 2020 to help the internal team with the development of its brand essence, team naming, and design. Plural came on board in May and has collaborated on social content development and implementation in support of the launch announcement. R/GA will focus on social strategy and long term community engagement and development.
"We are thrilled to have some of the most forward-leaning and innovative agencies in the business by our side as we endeavor to bring a women's football club to Los Angeles in 2022," said Julie Uhrman, Angel City Founder and President. "We are not just introducing a new football team to the market; we are rewriting the playbook for women's athletics. We are fortunate to have a team of talent who bring decades of experience building some of the biggest and most successful brands in the world while we endeavor to bring a new era of sport and entertainment to the communities of Los Angeles who deserve this moment."
"After the striking legacy of the U.S. Women's National Team, WFC LA is creating something that Los Angeles wants and deserves," said Drea Schneider, Battery’s Creative Director/Art Director, who is working on the Angel City campaign along with Creative Director/Copy Writer Michelle Nam. "We're proud to bring our sports and entertainment experience to work side by side with the new Angel City team to help drive change forward," said Nam. Battery’s other Southern California sports clients include the L.A. Clippers.
"R/GA LA is thrilled to help champion this pioneering majority women-founded, funded, and led organization," said R/GA Los Angeles Managing Director, Pam Scheideler. "We can't wait to share WFCLA's inspiring message of equality, entertainment, and excellence with sports fans worldwide."
"Plural is honored to work with Angel City's majority women-founded and owned football club to drive positive change in a real way—with the L.A. community at its core," said Daniel Plenge, Founder + Creative Lead. "Our launch announcement activation has yielded social metrics that have already soared above our goals, signaling just how powerful Angel City's presence will be in the NWSL."
Battery's mission is to create brand impact with work that cannot be ignored. The company has been awarded "Small Agency of the Year" by Advertising Age three times and in 2019, Havas bought a stake in Battery. We operate across 5 offices creating campaigns for forward-thinking clients, including Epic Games, Netflix, Activision, Royal Bank of Canada and the L.A. Clippers.
