I saw this as a kid, and while the animation doesn't impress me much today, the ad's message resonated with me. I quit smoking when I was pregnant because I remembered this ad. It's not easy to quit, and of course, I would do so to protect my unborn, that was a given. What I mean is, every time I felt like I wanted to smoke, I conjured up the image from this ad in my head. It worked.
