Turning trackback off now.

I don't know what we did to deserve this sort of attention but bastard spammers (may their balls rot off) have spent countless hours poking at and spamming this site these past few weeks. Mainly trackback spam, they have some sort of script going on so that 600-700 trackbacks are sent from different ip# to different pages and they hope that some stick.

Well none of them stick, but this whole waste of space has peeved me to the point of removing trackbacks (for the moment). I'd like to thank chaos scenario, random culture and marketingfacts for reinstalling my faith in humanity by doing real trackbacks in the midst of all that spam.

So, from his moment forward, pingbacks are all that will be in effect. This means that if you link to a page, you get a link on that page. You can't trackback.

Whats really sad is that several hours after this post, their script is still att iit trying to TB anything on this site. *Le sigh*

The only thing that's saved me from this is requiring all trackbacks to my site to be approved first. I've certainly deleted more than a number of spammy trackbacks over the last year...

Hope this starts to clear up... Good luck!

Thanks, I hope so too.

I tried that approval thing too, but with 700+ trackbaks in one afternoon, there are just so many to delete. I just got fed up, I guess. ;)
They also comment spam and ref-spam too for good measure. ARGH!

Unfortunately, I've uninstalled trackbacks long time ago because of the same problems. It's a shame but I'm afraid we have to live with it...

Spammers are scum, and the worst is that they think what they do is advertising. I'm so insulted. It wastes bandwidth, cpu and most of all log-space. There's no longer any realiable data in the ref-logs as it's spammed to hell - and I'm the only person who sees it. Talk about waste of space. back in '02 Wired did a story on that phenomenon :When the Spam Hits the Blogs - I can't believe its not dead yet.

Ironically, just as I posted that someone submitted spam to the front page too via the add news thing. That has got to be the most tedious one of all.

Its quite sad that spammers have managed to cripple great internet ideas, like email, Usenet, trackbacks and the old fashioned access log. No wonder people look at me funny when I say that I work in advertising, they think I'm like them.
And with the current ad creep, we soon will be.
