“Being in prison strips away every single sense of humanity that you hold dear.”
When people aren't valued, neither is their safety. In prison, incarcerated people are thrown into dangerous jobs and working conditions with no training or safety precautions. They're expected to just figure it out. Complaints are ignored and injuries trivialized. The endless supply of cheap or free labor, makes incarcerated workers seemingly replaceable in the eyes of administrators. People get hurt, sometimes permanently maimed and scarred, and there's no recourse or remedy. This is Serena's story.
