Volkswagen Golf gti - Gene - (2005) 0:60 (UK)

Directed by Jake and Ryoko at Stink, post production magic by the crew at Moving Pictures and conceived by DBB London, the latest (real! honestly! not like that by now infamous polo viral which has dubious roots) commercial for Volkswagen Golf gti features Gene Kelly singing and dancing in the rain. He doesn't just dance though, he breakdances like mad, pops and flips to a modern club mix version of singing in the rain. The song has been remastered by none other than Mint Royale and will be released in the charts. To get Gene in the ad, DDB London had to sweet talk Kelly's widow Patricia Ward Kelly and show her that this would be faithful to Gene and the original scene, just updated. Since Gene was a great dancer and approved of modern dance the idea works. Super adgrunts click read more to watch the magic.

Love it! Awesome! So much better than the other dead celebrity ads (Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe and Fred Astaire).

Agreed, the dancing is amazing, so this works! The Mint Royale tune is pretty groovy as well.

hmm... well, i'm at opposing thoughts on this. on one hand it's a nice update on the tune and all, but on the other hand, being a big fan of Gene and the musical genre that he and others created way back in the ol' days (at least for some of us) it was a little off-putting at first. Sorta like when they recolored one of Fred Astaire's early films and got the color of one of his suits wrong - it didn't ruin the movie, it just didn't look right.

David Bernal is amazing, Mint Royale the right choice for sound and this ad makes me want to weep with jealousy. Then dance! Fantastic.
