It is as if our pal caffeinegoddess summoned this when she wrote the article Brands get consumers involved in advertising, about timex, converse, Ban deodorant and Chrysler all are running competitions where the punters make the ads and can win something.
Geico wants you to submit a trailer with a concept for a feature-length film featuring the gecko, and you could win a golden gecko, a trip to Hawaii or a bigger TV to watch these punter-made ads on. Oh joy.
Are the ad agencies fired or on vacation? Wonder what made this rash of consumer-made ads trend happen.
I think it is very cool. I mean love or hate the gecko, it would be fun to make a little movie and if I win the trip to Hawaii plus a bunch of cash and prizes to boot....sign me up.

PermalinkI liked the Media post headline on this news: "GEICO Finds Way To Save Money On Insurance Ads: Ask Consumers To Make Them". Teehee. However in the article they write:
showing that the Mediapost is really out of touch. They should read Caffeinegoddess article ('s) more often. Her RSS-feed is right here on her user page folks.

PermalinkAre you working for Geico? Prostituting your ideas and creativity in the name of free publicity for a mjor company--insurance company, no less--is hardly "cool." Is anyone else as sick of the recent string of free publicity schemes in advertising as I am. I mean, on day one of design school (I immagine ad school to be the same) they tell you to never enter a contest because it cheapens the industry. Preserve some dignity and don't waste your time with this Geico campaign or anything similar.

PermalinkSounds like another money-saving idea brought to you by marketing wonks in suits. When you read the rights you sign over to the companies for contests like this, it's a wonder they don't actually end up owning your house.
Here's the general thinking by these people...
Have a digital camera? You're a photographer.
Have a computer with PowerPoint? You're a designer.
Have a video cam? You're a director.
Have GarageBand? You're a musician AND a music producer.
And, best of all, if you are any of the above, you can have the joy of giving your work to us (the Company) and we'll give you 15 seconds of fame in return.
It's getting very scary for creatives out there.
