'Girls In The Game' - Soccer Without Borders

Nemo Design partners with NFP during 2019 FIFA’s Women’s World Cup to create this film for young female players experiencing cultural barriers, discrimination and violence: www.soccerwithoutborders.org

We all know that the benefits of sport for girls are many, including greater academic achievement, higher self-esteem. My mother was also quite keen on the fact that soccer teaches teamwork and understanding, as well, so I found myself in various teams in my youth as a shortcut into the places we lived.
In fact, that's the whole point of Soccer Without Borders (SWB). It opens all kinds of doors.

The film, told entirely from a female perspective, highlights the unique challenges faced by refugee, immigrant and under-served youth, including: stereotyping, isolation, discrimination and violence.

SWB are using the video to create awareness of its mission to promote soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing under-served girls with the tools and community they need to overcome any obstacles in their way.

Erin Simons, SWB board member, says:  “We break down barriers so that girls of all cultural backgrounds can exercise their right to play.  As an organization that helps newcomers and refugee youth, it's important that we also work with partners that combine a curiosity, sensitivity and a passion for serving others. Nemo embodied these attributes and many more.  They worked with grace, humor and creativity to deliver a body of work that will help gain access to sport for many more under-served girls and young women."

Jesscia Vollendorf, Creative Director, Nemo Design, adds:  “With so many eyes on the sport at the moment, this is the ideal opportunity to highlight the SWB mission.  Working with its founders, board members, coaches and participants to understand the challenges girls face, we jumped at the opportunity to support them when they tasked us with concepting and producing a video that showcased this inspiring program.”

The SWB initiative hopes to encourage viewers to take action and support the program by donating, volunteering or sharing the video with other potential patrons.
