In Vanity Fair, of all places, we find Snapchat C.E.O. Evan Spiegel teasing the idea of ads on Snapchat
Spiegel revealed that advertising would be coming to the app “soon.”
“We’re cutting through the new technology around ads to the core of it, which is telling a story,” he said. “People are going to see the first Snapchat ads soon, they’re going to be around our Stories product.”
Snapchat stories are a way of stringing together daily Snaps to create a narrative, and they live for 24 hours, not mere seconds.
In this day and age of 'visual economy' brands need to find their way into young consumers daily conversations. While we've been able to mine for brands among your shared Facebook photos, for a few years already and can use your face in ads on Facebook, the eloping to new apps means new places to place ads. Eventually.
With third party scanners like StreamDitto we can scour tumblr, instagram and twitter for photos and spot brands and branded products even if they're partly obscured. Check streamditto for "coffee" and you'll find that Starbucks social media strategy of constantly spelling your name wrong has paid off, it's green mermaids as far as the eye can see.
Sounds amazing. Seeing as how they have such a great track record.
