Man, that recent campaign for The Guardian is just yummy looking isn't it? But have we seen it before...? Oh we might have..........
To the left a Poster by G. Pintori for the Olivetti Tetractys calculator created 1956 and to the right spring 2007 w+k campaign for the Guardian.
Via seven colors who got it via acejet170 who got it via beeker somehow and that's enough via's for this post - of course the whole thing can be found on wklondon.typepad.com.
Well, since the above arrow-ad seems to nod heavily at an old Olivetti design, I've just decided that my favorite in the Guardian campaign is the volume control one. I just adore how this campaign looks, intentional homage, brainsync, plagarism or not. I don't care, just keep those pastel-yummy colours coming, ya hear?
This one was the one which first caught my eye though, isn't that just marvelous?
More from G. Pintori for Olivetti because it's so damn drool-worthy.
Somewhat too alike not to be a hommage.

PermalinkWell, yes. Put the two together and it's quite obvious. But then that Olivetti one with the buildings – I'm thinking Paul Klee, perhaps? Someone like that anyway. Nothing new under the sun, really. Love the Guardian campaign though – but not as much as I love the new Adland, obviously.

PermalinkOh yes, I went googling for the painting I think you mean, and stumbled onto this Paul Klee wedding band on this page. Neat.
Yeah, I'm thinking its an intentional homage.

PermalinkOh, nice ring! Well, okay, I take the hint. You want my size, right?

PermalinkCheeky! Though your daughters name already fits in my "name the kids after computer languages" theme...

PermalinkI don't know about that...
FORTRAN do your homework.
GW BASIC - How can you be failing Math?!
PL/I - Eat your broccoli.
LISP - Get to school, I don't care what they call you.

PermalinkPerl, Pearl, Ada, Claire, Boo, JADE, Pascal, Ruby, Bertrand, ChucK, Einstein... Ok that last name might cause problems in school so I guess I'll just have to stick to having daughters who spell their names in a quirky manner. ;)

PermalinkThe Guardian one with all of the attached computer mice looks like a bunch of sperm trying to get away from the ova! [Something must have REALLY scared them].

PermalinkThere's a programming language called Fender Jazzmaster?

PermalinkI haven't found one with that name YET.
I liked my Gibson SG Special more - with the Fender Pro-Reverb amp (with TUBES!). [The axe got stolen, but I still have the amp]. :-)

PermalinkRip-off. But a very pretty one.

PermalinkHey Dabitch. I hadn't seen your post until now. I created the campaign. The arrows execution was a vertical redesign of a 92sheet poster which didn't look like Giovanni Pintori's work. But I love his work, so once the vertical poster had been designed, and I'd realized how close it was, instead of pulling it in a vein attempt to bolster my own originality — I added a giant G to the central arrows, there's also a P if you can see it.
The rest of the campaign didn't match GP's work, unless the bold use of color is his thing.
I love that you love the volume control, that was the other poster I got to design (the rest were done by my wonderful team Sophie Bodoh and Ian Perkins) — I have an obsession with repeating patterns, especially kinetic patterns that strobe.
Creative people can get caught up in their own ego, their own originality. We're all influenced by others. I'm glad that this was subconscious — but being compared to one of my design idols is OK if people see the connection.
Thanks for sharing all those years ago.
Marc
