This is not your ordinary commute seen in Mercedes "Road to Ruin," a post-apocalyptic take by Merkley and Partners, B-Reel director Jeffrey Plansker and The Mill.
Using scenes and characters from the upcoming film "Mad Max: Fury Road" starring Tom Hardy, the fire-throwing and makeshift-armor clad villains become the main character's driving companions. Thanks to the high-tech safety features of the Mercedes, appliances on fire and flying pianos are easily avoided.
2D lead artist Westley Sarokin comments on melding the two worlds of the film and the road together:
"The best part of this project was to see how far we could push the details and environments, but still be subtle and impactful. Backgrounds were added to every scene, with plumes of smoke, fire and debris. We augmented the practical car crashes with atmospheric details and explosions, to add some drama.
Creating explosions and lighting things on fire (in VFX) is always fun, and it was very satisfying to add to the controlled chaos of a regular every-day driver juxtaposed into an apocalyptic world."
So that you can make it home safe from the crazy roads, into your droll suburban home. Say hi to your friendly neighbour.
