Set to Queen's "Don't stop me now," Toyota attempts to convince us that driving the new 2018 Camry is a thrilling experience. This is the same car company that built a real roller coaster ride and took unsuspecting passengers through it with a stunt driver. For some reason the Thrill Ride campaign was a lot more believable than this. For one thing, there was no music in the Thrill Ride spot. For another, it was real people (sure they got paid after the fact but they were still real) whereas this feels like central casting for diversity. Sorry but extreme close-ups, strychnine smiling people and cut-ins of x-rays aren't going to convince me the car is fun to drive. They should have continued the testimonials. At least they were real.

PermalinkCynicism aside, that was one of the best car commercials I've ever seen. Beautifully shot, expertly paced, phenomenal editing. Nice work.

PermalinkFreddie Mercury wrote the song about gay sex clubs. Commercial especially creepy at end. Doesn't anyone research lyric meanings?
- reply
PermalinkPretty much never. They hear the hook, like that and use the song regardless of deeper meaning. There's worse combinations than this. For example, "Born in the USA" as a patriotic anthem.
To be fair, the lyrics in the beginning fit until you realize what "I'm gonna make a super-sonic man out of you" is a euphemism for.

PermalinkI'm sure they indeed did research, as I would assume Saatchi & Saatchi of L.A. is filled, if not owned, by gay, Hollywood, Zionist, liberal, elitist execs.

PermalinkThe most annoying commercial ever by Toyota. It's a beautiful car, just show the features of the car.
I mute the sound so I don't have to hear Freddy sing the worst Queen song in their catalog.

PermalinkVery very well done I MHO. It's just wholey different at a time when commercials are all so very similar. Which has the ability to keep you watching to the very end, exactly what Madison Avenue wants! And you do tend to feel the emotion and excitement of the people being portrayed in the commercial. There's a crescendo of movement that rises up in the music and you feel it inside yourself at the same time.
It's just ridiculous that anyone would even mention the sexual leanings or proclivities of the song or the person who wrote the song behind the commercial. Freddie Mercury and Queen are outstanding musical artists in their own right and it's wonderful music for this commercial and any other.

PermalinkUgh. Toyota TV advertisements are the banner ads of Prime Time. Mute.

PermalinkI cringe when I see this commercial and, in fact, all of the Camry commercials. I don't mind the Queen song, but, 1. illegal, high speed u-turns in the middle of city intersections can and do get people injured and killed, 2. driving a car is not a thrill ride, it is a solemn responsibility to get someplace safely, 3. the Camry commercials play an engine over-revving sound effect (like a race car). We all know the Camry as shown in the commercial does not make that sound. Shame on Toyota for lowering itself in this manner to try and get people to buy the Camry hoping to get a sports car experience.
