Eskom Switch, 2013 1:00 (South Africa)

Frieze Films and Rob Malpage direct this spot for power company Eskom for Saatchi and Saatchi Johannesburg.

The circumstances surrounding the shoot were a bit tricky. Rob wanted to shoot Telkom’s National Control Room, because power grids are awesome, doncha know. But the place has severely restricted access. So Rob recreated it thanks to the magic of art direction and CGI.

The message is pretty much what you'd expect from a power company:

Internet Explorer 10 - Do you know this guy / Karaoke - (2012)

If you hate Internet Explorer you're a sad cheetos-fingered dude, one razor-blade away from neckbeard. At least that's what I take from this ad, where one man is on a mission. From the comfort of his lava-lamped computer lab he comments on every single Internet Explorer news tidbit on the web saying that IE sucks. Sucks. Sucketh. Sucketh hard. It doesn't even matter that IE tweets about kittens and love.

"IE adopts an island of kittens and donates them all to children everywhere!!! #Kids+KittiesRULE."

iPad mini - Time / New Yorker / Marie Claire - (2012) back page ads

The people who work on the Apple campaign never hear John Gillard's words "White space does not communicate" in their heads. To them, they hacked it, white space is there to make a point. And yes, this has been superbly brilliant at times. It's clever, and understated in a wall of noise asking for attention, thereby standing out. Kind of like running a TV-spot with no sound at all. The mute-people would never know the difference, while the people who leave sound on might walk up to their unit and give it a proper smack. Only in the good old days when you had living-room hardware that could be smacked to work.

What is there in the darkroom? (2012) 1:45 (Russia)

This is a bit mind blowing. The Russian Chapter of The International Federation Of Photographic Art or FIAP and mfive group Moscow created this completely bananas interactive video aimed at photographers to get them using manual settings instead of automatic ones.

The first person POV works nicely in this capacity and whatever the guy is whistling is stuck in my head. It starts off feeling like it's one of them Saw movies or somethin'. See because using Manual is scary. But then they show you, nah it's not that scary.

Spread The Jam, 2012, :60, U.S.

The bummer about listening to music is that it's no longer a collective experience. We have our ear buds jammed permanently in our earholes and that's that. But HMDX is out to change that with its Jam Bluetooth Wireless Speakers.

Connect your mobile, ipad or ipod (who has an ipod these days?) or any bluetooth capable device and bam. Instaparty in the streets.

This is the brand's first advertising effort, courtesy of Woods Witt Dealy & Sons. It was directed by Anthony Mandler, who has also directed music videos for such notables as Lana Del Rey and Jay-Z.
