True love needs to be announced. So when he (Paul Davia) works in advertising, and she (Sarah Sandberg) does as well, why not propose via a full page advert?
He asks her innocently over the phone, 'can you have a look at my ad on page five of todays paper'? She obliges. She shrieks at the image of a large diamond ring on page five.
He placed an ad in Friday's paper. It had a big picture of a diamond engagement ring. Above the ring was her name, Sarah Sandberg. Below the ring were the words, "Will you marry me?"
Sandberg had just reached her desk at the Grant-Jacoby ad agency on Michigan Avenue when Davia called. He often talks about new customers so it was normal for him to say, "Could you look and see my new ad on Page 5?"
She looked.
She screamed.
He walked in from an office down the hall where he had been hiding.
"I got down on one knee and said 'I love you' and then I asked her to marry me," he said.
She said yes.
Davia had some heart-stopping moments fearing someone would blow the gaff before Sandberg reached her office and saw the paper.
She listens to the radio while getting dressed. Thursday night he sneaked the batteries out of every radio in the apartment. She takes the Brown Line L to work. He saw her off, then jumped into the car and tore down Lake Shore Drive.
Uh-oh. He turned his radio to WTMX-FM and there were Eric and Kathy talking about "this ad" they saw in the Sun-Times. But they had no details.
aaaaw.... *wipes tear from eye* how darn cute. sun times has more.
will he take out an equally large ad for the big "D"?
(someone had to say it..)

PermalinkI like the concept, but I think the copy could've been sharper. Plus, the image of a diamond ring is predictable for a wedding proposal. What kind of ad would it be if Mother or KesselsKramer created it?

PermalinkAaah, but I think the target market has a soft spot for predictable images of diamond rings... ;) hahaha!

PermalinkIt would be just as predictable - but with an ironic choice of photographer - or perhaps just a photocopied diamond ring. yeah, thats hip.
