How does one lose and then regain a smile? To promote Kodak’s brand, Ogilvy and Mather NY called upon Paranoid US Director Sophie Gateau to create a magical tale of the girl who lost her smile called “It’s Time to Smile”.Sophie conceived of a character appearing via life size paper illustrations, yet living in a real environment. For the illustrations of the girl, Sophie chose to work with talented Parisian Illustrator, Marjolaine Siriex, well-known in France as the publisher/creator of her own magazine and memberof various French art collectives. Since the spot transitions from animation to live action, they chose to use the actress as reference for the illustrations. Photographing her image and key movements, Sophie then relied on a team of Paranoid Design Studio animators to create her various motions. With approximately five hundred real sized prints of animation frames, the production crew created a system of sticking each cut-out on a wall, capturing the image, removing the print, and then posting a new cut-out. After this lengthy process, Editor Scott Canning edited the thousands of images with Paranoid Design Studio finishing final post-production
